Women's Softball European Cup Winners Cup B: day four recap
Four close games were played in Moergestel, Netherlands, on day four of the Women's Softball European Cup Winners Cup B 2023. Roef! has claimed the top spot in the standings with their fifth victory.
The Zurich Challengers (SWI) opened this day with a 5-0 victory over Medvednica (CRO). 2 runs in the first and 2 in the second gave them a head start and they never looked back. Rio Sanchez and Taylor Ann Edwards (ZUR) combined for a 1 hit shutout.
Game 2 saw the Thunderbirds out of Israel win 3-1 over the Barbarians from the UK. Pascalle Morauw (THU) walked in as the first run of the game. Debby Muezers (BRB) doubled to left field in the top of the third inning and scored the game-tying run a bit later on a dropped flyball. In the bottom of the third inning, the Thunderbirds scored two more runs to put the 3-1 score on the board. Maud Talma (THU) collected the win after going 5 innings strong (3 hits, no earned runs, and 6 Ks). Adrianna Berger (THU) came in to save the game.
The Titans from Botswana and the Crazy Chicklets out of Wiener Neustadt in Austria battled it out in game 3 of the day. Louise Mc Garry (CCW) was the first run of the game. Titans managed to tie the game when Tlotlo Maluzo (TBS) crossed the plate on a passed ball. The Chicklets scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third and added another one in the fourth.
The Botswanese girls once again proved they never give up. They got together in the dugout, brought out the chants, and fought their way back into the game. Boitumelo Moilwa (TBS) and Maitumelo Serumola (TBS) scored for the Titans in the fifth inning making it a 1 run ballgame with 2 innings left to play. They knocked on the door once more in the 6th inning but left two runners stranded. McKenna Leamon (CCW) and her team kept the Botswanese offense under control and sealed the 4-3 victory.
Anna Westberry (ROE) threw a complete game shutout in the evening game against the Challengers from Zürich. She was perfect for 4 innings until Taylor Mc Cants (ZUR) singled into right field. Anna Westberry was not only dominant in the circle tonight, but she also grabbed a bat in the 5th inning to hit for Isa Los (ROE) for the first run of the game. In the same inning, Jessica Goldyn and Tess Remmers also scored for Roef!
Emma De Brouwer was the fourth run for Roef as part of a double steal in the bottom of the sixth putting the 4-0 final score on the board.
Roef! has claimed the top spot tonight with their fifth victory but behind them are still three teams fighting for a spot in the final: Crazy Chicklets (AUS) have a 4-1 record going into Friday, behind them are Challengers Zurich (SWI) 3-2 and Thunderbirds (ISR) with a 2-2 record.
