U-12 Baseball European Championship Day 2: Italy, Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic book tickets for Semi-Finals

After two days of preliminary round action at the U-12 Baseball European Championship in Vienna, Austria, the semifinalists are already known. Defending champion Italy and the Netherlands in Group A, as well as record title holder Czech Republic and Germany in Group B have won two games apiece to claim spots in the semi-finals. On Thursday the first round ends with the teams determining the group winners.

Hungary – Italy 0-20 (Box score)

Italy did quick work with Hungary in the morning game in Vienna, winning 20-0 in three innings. Seven runs in the second and twelve in the third frame ran up the score to lead to a mercy-rule ending. Twelve different players scored for the Squadra Azzurri, six of them more than once. Carlo Giovanni Pezzullo and Matteo Almonte Rodriguez combined for seven RBI. Three pitchers combined to strike out seven of the nine batters they faced.

France – Czech Republic 5-6 (Box score)

The Czech Republic edged out France 6-5 in a nail-biter on Wednesday afternoon in Vienna. Czechia took a quick 6-2 lead after three innings. France started a rally in the bottom of the sixth and last frame of the game, putting three runs on the board to reduce the deficit to a single run. They then had the bases loaded with one out. But a 1-2-3 double play not only stopped the tying run, but also ended the game in favor for the Czech team.

Austria – Germany 6-22 (Box score)

Germany celebrated a 22-6 win over host Austria to win their second game in as many days. Austria had actually the better start, taking a 6-2 lead after three innings. But Germany put a whopping 16 runs on the board in the fourth frame en route to an easy victory. An inside the park home run by Nicolas Voegler and five triples by the team – two from Constantin Bieth – pathed the way.

Lithuania – Netherlands 5-13 (Box score)

The Netherlands won the second Wednesday evening game by a score of 13-5 against Lithuania for their second victory in the tournament. After Lithuania scored twice in the opening period and held a 2-0 lead for two innings, the Dutch team turned the score around in the third and blew it wide open in the fourth. Lithuania would scored three more runs, but it was not enough to come back against the Netherlands.

Outlook

On Thursday the preliminary round ends with the unbeaten teams battling it out in the afternoon. The other four hope for their first wins en route to the placement phase. Live scoring and live streaming for selected games is available through www.wbsceurope.org.
