Greece secures Spot in 2025 Baseball European Championship with Win over Ukraine

Greece defeated Ukraine 8-4 in the afternoon game in Horis ballpark in Brno at the Baseball European Championship 2023. With the victory Greece is finishing in 13th place in the final standings and therefore secured a spot in the next edition. Ukraine meanwhile gets relegated together with Austria and Hungary.

The Greek team had the perfect start into the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 4-0 lead. A bases loaded walk by John Spiliotis pushed the first run over the plate. A RBI single by Antonio Torres and a two-run single by Hondro Torres capped the rally.

Kostiantyn Boiko got Ukraine on the board scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth. But RBI singles by Antonio Torres and Tom Roulis sandwiched a sac fly by Hondro Torres to make it 7-1 for Greece in the fifth.

Ukraine didn’t go down without a fight. In the eighth they cut the deficit to 4-7 with a two-run double by Viacheslav Babii and a RBI single by Dmytro Limarenko. But they couldn’t complete the comeback. Greece even added another run by Konstantinos Karaiskos on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the frame.

Daniel Gosselin allowed ten hits, four runs and two walks in 7 2/3 innings for the win. Yanni Orfanidis closed out the win. Mykyta Liabakh got charged with four runs on three hits and two base on balls in just two thirds in an inning, taking the loss.
