Spain blows by Sweden to advance to Semifinals

Spain defeated Sweden 18-3 in the first quarterfinal in Brno on Thursday afternoon at the Baseball European Championship 2023 to advance to the semifinal. Team Espana scored in each of the five innings played to cruise past the Scandinavian surprise from the first round. Spain now will face the winner of the quarterfinal between the Netherlands and Israel on Friday.

Spain confirmed its favorite status from the start.

They took a quick lead and blew the score wide open with a nine-run fourth frame. Omar Hernandez led the way on offense, by going 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and five RBI. Engel Beltre and Edgar Rondon also went deep for Spain.

Tommy Lindell homered for Sweden.

Orlando Rodriguez allowed four hits, three runs and four walks in five innings for the win, striking out five in the process and earning the win.

Benjamin Johnson issued seven hits, five runs and two base on balls in two innings to take the loss.
