Netherlands win U-15 Baseball European Championship 2023 in Trnava

The Netherlands captured the Gold Medal at the U-15 Baseball European Championship 2023 in Trnava, Slovakia with a 14-4 finals win over Italy. It is their record holding 13th European Championship in that age category. Czechia won the Bronze Medal with a 20-6 win over France. Germany finished in fifth place.

Gold Medal Game: Netherlands – Italy 14-4 (Box score)
The Netherlands defeated Italy 14-4 in a one-sided gold medal game on Saturday evening in Trnava, Slovakia to capture the title in the cadets euros. After Italy took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Dutch team took control of the game in the bottom half with three runs and added six more in the second to blow the score open. In the end the Netherlands needed just five innings to celebrate the victory.

Guus Toemen dominated on offense going 3-for-3 with seven RBI. Djevan Jansen and Federic Irving scored three runs for the Dutch. Jansen and Dean Moust combined for six strikeouts on the mound in five strong innings to keep Italy’s offense mostly in check. Andrea Destro scored two runs for the Squadra Azzurri. Corrado Resca collected three hits and two RBI.

By reaching the finals of the U-15 Baseball European Championship the Netherlands and Italy also qualified for next year’s WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup.

Bronze Medal Game: France – Czechia 6-20 (Box score)
In a memorable bronze medal game Czechia prevailed 20-6 over France. While the score indicates a lopsided affair, it was a close contest for the first five innings. Czechia led for most of the game, but France always stayed close. When the French team cut the deficit to 6-7 in the fifth, Czechia answered with 13 runs in the top of the sixth to put the game into the bed. Lukas Kincl had five RBI for Czechia. Jakub Kliner and Michael Coleman scored three runs each. Aymeric Girondeau-Peris had two of the six French runs.

Classification Round: Slovakia – Germany 0-22 (Box score)
On Saturday morning Germany quickly shut out Slovakia 22-0 in three innings to conclude the classification round and finish in fifth place in the final standings of the U-15 Baseball European Championship. Hungary and Slovakia finished sixth and seventh respectively. Germany scored one run in the first, six in the second and 15 in the third frame en route to the win. Pepe Stockhaus struck out eight of the nine batters he faced. He also scored twice and drove in two. Jayme Warlies scored four runs. Tyler Speer had four hits, three runs and two RBI.
