Hungary – Germany 1-22 (Box score)
Germany
scored 13 runs in the first two innings and added eight more in the fourth of a
22-1 blowout against Hungary in the morning game on Thursday in Trnava. Fabian
Spiess went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBI. Finn Niemeyer scored
four times for Germany, which had opened the tournament with losses to Italy
and Czechia. Milan Svab scored the lone run for Hungary, which dropped to 0-3
in the tournament.
Czechia – Italy 7-10 (Box score)
In a
meeting between two teams, which already had been qualified for the semifinals,
Italy edged out Czechia 10-7 to win Group A of the preliminary round in the Thursday
afternoon contest. Italy opened the game with eight runs in the first two
frames and looked like a lopsided winner early on. But Czechia scored in each
of the last four innings to cut the deficit, but in the end they couldn’t
complete the comeback successfully. Andrea Destro collected three hits and two
runs for Italy and also pitched 4 1/3 strong innings to pick up the win on the
mound. Federico Tamburini also scored twice. Jakub Kliner drove in two for
Czechia. Lukas Chromy had two runs.
Netherlands – Slovakia 17-2 (Box score)
The
Netherlands celebrated their second win in as many days with a 17-2 win over
host Slovakia in the evening game in Trnava. Six runs in the first and six in
the third blew the score wide open, as the Dutch team crossed the home plate in
each of the four innings played. Toss Linus Spekking had four runs and two RBI
for the Netherlands. Jonas Rijpma scored three times. Jakub Holeski and Lukas
Brhlovic scored the two runs for Slovakia in the second inning.
Outlook
The U-15 Baseball European Championship continues on Friday with three games. In the morning at 10:00 Slovakia and Hungary open the classification round for ranks fifth to seventh. At 13:30 the first semi-final will feature the Netherlands and defending champion Czechia. In the evening game at 17:00 Italy squares off against France in the second semi-final.
