Italy, Israel, Spain and Croatia open Baseball European Championship with lopsided wins

In the morning games on Sunday Italy, Israel, Spain and Croatia picked up commanding victories over Hungary, Switzerland, Greece and Ukraine, as the Baseball European Championship 2023 got underway in Czechia.

Israel – Switzerland 14-1 (Box score)
Israel scored in five of the first six innings to cruise past Switzerland 14-1 in the first game in Prague on Sunday morning.

Israel already led 8-0 after two innings to decide things early. Ten different players scored for Israel. Rob Paller hit a home run and drove in three runs. Assaf Lowengart also had three RBI.

Joshua Crouse scored the lone run for the Swiss team.

David Feins earned the win, Jonah Schaller got charged with the loss.

Croatia – Ukraine 11-1 (Box score)
Croatia prevailed 11-1 over Ukraine in the first game in Brno on Sunday. Croatia scored four runs in the first and the fourth, while putting on runs on the scoreboard in five of the seven innings played.

Kruno Gojkovic led the way going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Jose Herrera had three hits and three RBI.

Carlos Garcia Troncoso struck out eight in seven innings for the win.

Bohdan Lucheiko crossed the plate for Ukraine in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout. Andrii Boiko took the loss.

Italy – Hungary 15-2 (Box score)
Italy took the opener on Sunday morning in Trebic by a score of 15-2 against Hungary.

After scoring four runs in the first, Italy first missed out on blowing the game wide open until they put eight runs on the board in the fourth.

Nine players scored for Italy. Vito Friscia and Cesare Astorri scored thrice for Italy. Sebastiano Poma had three RBI.

Cesar Chacin Horvath scored twice for Hungary on RBIs by Graeham Luttor.

Mattia Aldegheri got the win, Sean Fekete took the loss.

Spain – Greece 14-1 (Box score)
Spain scored in four of the first five frames to blow by Greece 14-1 in the first game in Ostrava on Sunday.

Three runs each in the first and third as well as seven in the fifth increased the score quickly.

Omar Hernandez, Edison Valerio and Gabriel Lino hit home runs for Spain.

Kasey Caras connected for a solo home run for the lone Greek run.

Anderson De Leon picked up the win for Spain, Dimitrios Kourtis took the loss.

Outlook
In the evening day one at the Baseball European Championship gets concluded with the opener of host Czechia against Austria in Ostrava in front of a sellout crowd.
Defending champion Netherlands take on France.
Belgium is squaring off against Germany.
Great Britain plays against Sweden.
