Great Britain ends Medal Hopes for host Czechia at Baseball European Championship

Great Britain’s successful run at the Baseball European Championship 2023 continues. The British team defeated host Czechia 12-2 in the quarterfinals on Thursday evening in Brno to reach the semifinals against Germany on Friday. After Czechia took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the third, GB came right back and then blew the score open with five runs in the fifth and four in the eighth.

Eric Sogard had given the 2000-plus crowd at Draci Brno ballpark hopes for the medal round with a two-run home run in the top of the third. But Great Britain answered right away in the bottom half with a sac fly by Jacob Lambdin and a RBI groundout by Harry Ford to tie the game. Then Nick Ward went deep to put the team of manager Drew Spencer up in front.

In the fifth Nick Ward and Ben Leid extended the lead with a two-run double and a RBI single before Shamoy Christopher hit a two-run home run to cap the five-run rally. In the eighth Christopher added a solo shot and Jacob Lambdin had a RBI single to make it 10-2. Harry Ford then hit a two-run home run to end the game in walk-off fashion due to the ten-run rule.

Harry Ford and Nick Ward combined for seven hits, four runs and six RBI in the game. Martin Cervenka had three hits for Czechia, Vojtech Mensik and Filip Smola each two. Joseph Daniel King struck out five in 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Martin Schneider got charged with the loss.
