Defending champ, Czech teams and co-host prevail on Day 1 of Champions Cup

The Baseball European Champions Cup started on Tuesday with the first four games of the preliminary round. The two Czech participants Arrows Ostrava and Draci Brno celebrated opening day wins, as did defending champion ASD Parma and co-host HCAW.

ASD Parma – Untouchables Paderborn 13-0 (Box score)

Defending champion ASD Parma celebrated an easy 13-0 shutout over German vice champion Untouchables Paderborn in the first game of Group A on Tuesday afternoon in Amsterdam. Parma took a quick 4-0 lead after three innings and blew the score wide open with nine combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Cesare Astorri hit a home run and drove in six runs in the game. Alberto Mineo scored twice and collected three RBI. Pablo Guillen issued just three hits to Paderborn hitters in a six-inning gem. Nic Goebert got charged with the loss.

Bonn Capitals – Arrows Ostrava 1-3 (Box score)

Arrows Ostrava scored three runs in the top of the eighth innings to rally for a 3-1 victory over German champion Bonn Capitals on Tuesday afternoon in Bussum. Bonn had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Eric Brenk scored on a dropped flyball. But RBI singles by Michael Vykoukal, Radim Novotny and Matyas Kozel turned the tide in favor of Arrows. Ondrej Satoria pitched seven strong innings for the win. Titus von Kapff got charged with the loss, relieving Lucas Jordan in the eighth.

HCAW – Rouen Huskies 18-5 (Box score)

Co-host HCAW routed the Rouen Huskies 18-5 in the Tuesday evening game in Bussum. HCAW returned to the European stage with a bang, scoring 14 runs in the first three frames for a blowout win. Quintin De Cuba went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Jair van Borkulo also had three RBI for HCAW. Victor Draijer scored three times. Gabriel Harrison drove in three for Rouen. Arjen Nijkamp earned the win in relief for HCAW. Luis Ysla took the loss, lasting just one-plus innings as the Huskies starting pitcher.

Draci Brno – Amsterdam Pirates 4-3 (Box score)

Draci Brno stunned co-host Amsterdam Pirates on their home field with a walk-off 4-3 win on Tuesday evening in Group A of the Champions Cup 2023. Draci blew a 3-0 lead late in the game, but still celebrated the victory when Filip Mostek singled with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to plate the decisive fourth run for Brno. Amsterdam had used a two-run double by Roelie Henrique in the eighth and a RBI groundout by Duco Nuijten in the top of the ninth to erase the three-run deficit. But it didn’t help to give the Pirates the win.

Outlook

On Wednesday the Baseball European Champions Cup continues with Draci Brno taking on the Untouchables Paderborn at 3pm in Amsterdam. At the same time Bussum will see the duel of first-day losers Bonn Capitals and Rouen Huskies in Group B. In the evening Arrows Ostrava faces HCAW in Bussum, while Amsterdam’s ballpark sets the stage for last year’s final between Amsterdam Pirates and ASD Parma.
