Great Britain rallies to beat Spain on route to World Baseball Classic 2023

Great Britain became the first team to qualify for the 2023 World Baseball Classic after celebrating a 10-9 extra inning win against Spain on Tuesday evening at the qualifier in Regensburg, Germany. Spain will get a second chance to advance to the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday evening against Czechia. The Czech Republic beat host Germany 8-4 to stay in the tournament.

Czech Republic – Germany 8-4 (Box score)

The Czech Republic upset host Germany 8-4 on Tuesday afternoon to reach the second final at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Regensburg. After Billy Germaine put Germany ahead 3-0 in the top of the first with a three-run home run, the Czech team tied the game with home runs by Petr Zyma and Martin Cervenka in the bottom of the frame and then went on to get the lead by themselves later on. Cervenka added another home run and scored three times total in the game. Germany got eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

Great Britain – Spain 10-9 (Box score)

In a memorable game Great Britain defeated Spain 10-9 after ten innings to win a ticket to the main event of the World Baseball Classic for the first time ever. Spain actually came out swinging scoring four runs in the first inning and led 8-3 midway through the fourth inning. But the British squad slowly crawled back and eventually tied the game on a solo home run by Jaden Rudd in the bottom of the ninth inning. In the tenth, Spain failed to score with the tie-breaking runner on base, while Great Britain ended the game with a sac fly by Alex Crosby. Harrison Ford and D’Shawn Knowles also homered for GB. Noelvi Marte hit a three-run home run for Spain.
