Belgium secures 11th place at Baseball European Championship with victory over Switzerland

Belgium is finishing in 11th place in the Baseball European Championship 2023 thanks to an 8-3 victory over Switzerland on Saturday afternoon in Blansko. Both teams already had secured their participation in the 2025 A-Pool thanks to their relegation round opening wins on Thursday.

Switzerland scored first thanks to a sac fly by Ryan Byrne in the top of the second. But then Belgium came through with six runs in the third, which eventually also decided the outcome. Steven De Lannoy tied the game with the RBI single. Axel Poesmans followed through with a two-run double to get the Red Hawks ahead.

A RBI groundout by Dennis De Quint, a RBI single by Robin Roevens and a RBI double by Zion De Brauwer capped the rally. De Quint added a RBI single in the fourth and a RBI double in the sixth. In between Switzerland scored twice on a RBI single by Hayden Jung-Goldberg and a sac fly by Kyle Williamson in the sixth.

Kevin Desmedt went the distance for Belgium issuing just three runs (2 ER) on six hits in nine innings, while striking out six. Cee-Jay Savoldelli conceded five hits, six runs and three base on balls in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
