The Women’s Softball European Championship gets underway on Sunday

The twenty-third Women’s Softball European Championship is set to take place in the Barcelona area, Spain. Starting on Sunday, July 24, 2022, twenty-one teams will play 99 games to define the 2022 European Champion. The three medalists will qualify for the first stages of the WBSC World Cup.

Twenty-one teams are in Barcelona, Spain, to play in the 2022 Women’s Softball European Championship. Divided into four pools, the national squads will play almost 100 games to crown the European Champion and qualify for the WBSC World Cup. The medalists, in fact, will take part in the 2023 WBSC World Cup second phase.

  • Italy, Poland, Croatia, Belgium, and Greece are in Pool A;
  • Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Ireland, and Switzerland are in Pool B;
  • Czech Republic, France, Ukraine, Great Britain, and Turkiye are in pool C;
  • Israel, Spain, Slovakia, Denmark, Finland, and Malta are in pool D.

The Championship is set to start on Sunday, July 24, and end on Saturday, July 30. The teams will play over four fields in Catalunya, Spain: Sant Boi, Montjuic, Viladecans and Gavà.

The top two teams in the four pools will play for the standing in the quarterfinal groups. The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th teams in each pool will play a single round-robin for the standing in the quarterfinal groups.

The finals are programmed for Saturday, July 30, the new European Champion will be crowned. The Bronze Medal game is set to start at 15:45, and the Championship Game at 18:00. The medallists will take part in the 2023 WBSC World Cup.

Italy is the defending back-to-back Champion, after winning in 2019 in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and in 2021 in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy.
