Day one at the U-18 European Baseball Championship in the Czech Republic on Saturday saw five lopsided wins in the ballparks in Hluboka and Ostrava and an evening rainout, which adds a game to day two on Sunday.

Lithuania – Netherlands 0-20 (Box score)

Defending champion the Netherlands didn’t have any trouble with Lithuania in game one of the competition in Group A on Saturday in Hluboka, as they stormed to a 20-0 shutout in four innings. Six runs in the first and ten in the second escalated things quickly. Matis Crouwel went 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and six RBI. He and Kendrey Maduro hit home runs in the game. Nerijus Kelmelis had both hits for Lithuania.

Ireland – Italy 0-15 (Box score)

Italy shut out Ireland 15-0 in four innings in their first game in Group B on Saturday in Ostrava. Italy scored in each of the four innings played, putting a seven-spot on the scoreboard in the fourth frame. Alessandro Laise led the way from the leadoff spot, scoring three runs and driving in four. Alessandro Volpe also scored thrice for Italy. Matthew Dutton had the lone Irish hit in the game against the strong pitching of Giacomo Taschin, who struck out 11 in four scoreless one-hit, one-walk innings.

Austria – Spain 0-12 (Box score)

Game two in Hluboka on Saturday lasted five innings, as Spain shut out Austria 12-0. After a scoreless first, Spain scored in each of the next four innings en route to an easy win. Lius Badenas had three runs for Spain. Eusebio Salas collected three RBI. Juan Salazar went five scoreless innings on the board, allowing just three hits. Felix Dittrich had two of them for Austria.

Czechia – Belgium 15-5 (Box score)

After Belgium took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Czechia put nine runs on the board in the second inning and then went on to prevail 15-5 in their opening matchup in Ostrava in Group B on Saturday. Belgium cut the deficit to 5-9 after four innings, but Czechia added six more runs in the fifth and sixth to end the contest due to ten-run rule. Matous Bubenik went deep for the Czech Republic. Benjamin Morgan had six RBI on two hits. Warre Elbers went 3-for-3 with two RBI for Belgium.

France – Great Britain 15-0 (Box score)

In the evening game in Hluboka France defeated Great Britain 15-0 in Group A on Saturday. The French U18 national team scored seven runs in the opening frame and led 10-0 after two innings. They didn’t stop scoring until the game was concluded by 15-run rule in the fourth. Esteban Priones led the way by going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI. Pierre Doat and Julien Cojolum also scored three runs each. Max Manoff had two of the six British hits in the game.

Israel – Germany postponed

The game between Israel and Germany was rained out on Saturday evening in Ostrava. The game will be made up on Sunday morning at 10am, as both teams will have the challenge of a doubleheader day ahead.
