Parma wins European Champions Cup 2022 in Bonn, Germany

ASD Parma has won the Men’s Baseball European Champions Cup 2022 in Bonn, Germany. They defeated L&D Amsterdam 7-6 in an exciting final game on Saturday evening at the Rheinaue ballpark. It was the 15th title for Parma in the history of the European Cup Baseball and the second in a row. The hosting Bonn Capitals finished in third place after beating ASD San Marino 6-3 in the bronze medal match. Earlier in the day Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam claimed seventh place with a 10-8 win over the VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe in the tenth inning. Arrows Ostrava and Draci Brno finished tied for fifth place.

The final game at the Champions Cup full-filled its expectations, as ASD Parma and L&D Amsterdam fought an intense back-and-forth affair to find a winner. In the end Parma prevailed 7-6. A two-run double by Manuel Marceo Joseph Timo, who earlier had a solo home run, turned the score around in the top of the eighth. Amsterdam had led 2-0, 5-3 and 6-4 in the game, but failed to close out the victory. Denzel Richardson contributed with two home runs, Sicnarf Loopstock with a two-run single. The Pirates threatened at the end of the game to come back, but Marc-Andre Habeck struck out Tommy van der Sanden with two runners on to end the game. Yomel Rivera picked up the win in relief. Franklin van Gurp got charged with the loss.

Game for 3rd Place: ASD San Marino – Bonn Capitals 3-6 (Box score)

In the game for third place the Bonn Capitals defeated ASD San Marino 6-3 to earn the bronze medal in the final standings of the European Champions Cup in front of their own fans. San Marino took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Bonn answered with a two-run home run by Danny Lankhorst in the fifth. In the seventh the Capitals added four runs to turn the score and the game around for good. The game was reduced to seven innings due to logistical reasons by the technical commission ahead of the start of the game.

Game for 7th Place: VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe – Curacao Neptunus 8-10 (Box score)

Curacao Neptunus defeated a resilient VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe team on Saturday afternoon in the game for seventh place at the Champions Cup by a score of 10-8 after ten innings. Stijn van der Meer decided the game with a grand slam in the top of the tenth inning. Curacao Neptunus had erased an early 0-4 deficit, but also gave away a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth, when Drew Janssen connected for a two-run home run to send the contest into extra innings.
